FERRY VILLAGE

Map
Ferry Village, the oldest neighborhood in the City of
South Portland, gets its name from the ferry service
which used to run to and from Portland until 1912.

The Ferry Village Neighborhood Conservation
Association (FVNCA) was formed in August 1985 and is
the oldest existing neighborhood association in the City.
It was formed to address the development boom in the
1980's which was quickly altering the character of the
waterfront and many Greater-Portland neighborhoods.

FVNCA strives to work with potential developers on
creating properties that compliment not compete with
the character of Ferry Village. Developers have learned
that input and feedback from neighbors are important in
the success of a project.

FVNCA's efforts and accomplishments have included:

FVNCA was instrumental in the start-up of other
neighborhood organizations and the creation of
the now defunct South Portland Neighborhood
Conservation Association - a coalition of these
neighborhood groups.

FVNCA was instrumental in the formation of the
non-profit organization -- South Portland Land
Trust, as well as the City-managed Land Bank
which provides seed money for the acquisition of
available open space.
