Bug Light Park
Led by a group called Concerned Citizens,
the City acquired this 8.78 acre property which was the
location of the former East Yards shipbuilding complex
during WWII.  It is on the South Portland side of the
entrance to Portland Harbor and the Fore River.

In 1997, this abandoned industrial lot was cleaned-up
and opened to the public.  It offers a walking path, salt
water fishing, and a public boat ramp (seasonal fees).
MAP

The park is home to Bug Light, the affectionate name
given to the
Portland Breakwater Light House.  This
unusual lighthouse was erected in 1855, then rebuilt in
1875 modeled after the Choragic Monument of
Lysicrates of ancient Athens. The six Corinthian
columns originally held up a fourth-order fresnel lens
with a red beam which guided ships in Casco Bay.

Amenities: Restrooms (seasonal); Parking; Scenic view
of Portland waterfront, Casco Bay and Fort Gorges;
Lighthouse; Benches; Greenbelt walkway; Dogs allowed.
